Sandhole Oak Barn Wedding Photography - Louise and Matt

The weather may have been chilly (and even snowing at one point), but this wedding was all about being warm, welcoming, relaxed and fun.

Louise and Matt got married at Sandhole Oak Barn in Congleton on 23rd February 2013  and I had the pleasure of photographing their day. Here are a few quickly-edited pictures, which will hopefully reach them before they jet off to Cuba on their honeymoon!

Who Needs a Wedding Photographer Anyway?!

These are austere times, there is no denying that. We all need to be very careful about where we spend our money, and brides-to-be are no exception.

It can be very easy to think about cutting a corner here, and shaving a cost there, but if you're not careful you run the risk of jeopardising the memories of the day you're working so hard to create.

You could probably reduce costs on your cake, your invites and even your wedding favours, and no-one would notice. But if you scrimp on your photographer, and use someone who is not up to the job, would anyone notice? ABSOLUTELY!

You may have seen some of Uncle Bob's photos, and may think that he knows one end of an f-stop from the other, but it's simply not just down to being proficient with a camera. Wedding photography is one of the most varied and fast moving photography assignments out there - you have to be able to deal with changing lighting, changing locations, changing weather, organising lots of people, subjects who might rather be at the bar, and the frequently delicate family relationships that can bubble over after a few glasses of Buck's Fizz.

So, before you decide to let Uncle Bob loose on your wedding with his camera, ask yourself these questions...

Another long overdue wedding blog, this time from second shooting with Rob Finney Photography at the Albright Hussey Manor hotel in Shrewsbury... a bit of a hike for me, but anything to help Rob out :-)


With Rob leading the 'must-have' photography for the day, it was down to me to capture a different perspective on the wedding. Here's a few from the day...

The Wedding Ring Race...

Before Karen and Danny's wedding got into full flow, I visited the groom during his preparations to shoot a few 'getting ready' pictures of him and the boys. Part of this visit was to shoot the rings, as this was my only chance - I had been told "once they're on, they're not coming off!"


I shot the following four wedding ring pictures in the space of about one and a half minutes, within a very small space in the living room and front garden, surrounded by the organised chaos of groomsmen putting on cravats and buttonholes...


You can shoot striking, clean images almost anywhere with a little bit of creativity and imagination...

Shot outside with the best man holding the rings in his hand over a patch of grass.

Shot on the windowsill, into the light.

Shot on the arm of an armchair. 

Shot on a greetings card on the mantlepiece.

Cocktails and Inspiration at the Great John Street Hotel

Putting the 'Professional' Into Wedding Photography

There are a lot of blogs and articles out there devoted to the subject of how to be a great wedding photographer - they talk about lists of 'must-have' shots, how to pose people for formal groups, and where to stand the Bride and Groom to get the 'good light'. Whilst this advice is obviously valid, and very useful to those photographer looking to break into wedding photography, they seem to miss something, and that for me is that you shouldn't just aim to be a 'great wedding photographer', you should aim to be a 'great PROFESSIONAL wedding photographer'.
